Now I will tell you right off the bat that I do not know jack squat about Twitter. I have talked with a few people who use it and have checked out Twitter's website for information, but I am still not confident in all it provides.
However, looking at an article that I found on Mediapost I wonder if Twitter is going to make a mistake? According to many, Twitter has been significantly growing for a couple of different reasons. First of all, when you go to search for someone, such as the NBA star Shaq, you know it's really him. Secondly, Twitter is not crammed with all that "media garbage". You know...all the gifts....farmtown....mafia wars....ADVERTISEMENTS! MySpace and Facebook are very popular but they are bombarded with all this "media garbage". This is one reason that Twitter seems to have been doing so well.
But this article talks about the possibilities of Twitter placing advertising on it's site. Is this going to be the beginning of a downfall for Twitter? Is this the first of more to come? I realize that you have to make money in order for your company to grow, but are we making a mistake? People like it how it is. Do we need to change it...what do you think?

I personally don't have a twitter but i do have a myspace and a facebook.I cant stand all the "media garbage" on the sites it is very annoying.I think if twitter starts putting advertisements and things like that on there site that it's going to become like every other social networking website.
ReplyDeleteI work for an ad agency here in town. I understand that people dislike the "media garbage" but what most people take for granted when evaluating sites such as MySpace, Twitter, and Facebook is the very fact that they don't pay a dime to register and use these sites. These sites are a FREE SERVICE that you sign up for and are welcome to discontinue usage of at any given time. You're not contractually bound to pay a monthly fee. It is practically impossible to offer any type of free service for an extended amount of time without corporate sponsorship. Think of this "garbage" as what pays your registration fee.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who creates some of this "media garbage" that you guys don't like - I promise you that not everyone views it as garbage. Many business "pay-per-click" for their advertisements on social networking sites. We have multiple clients that see a great boost in business when they circulate a new ad on facebook - or even Google..and they consider their "pay-per-click" contracts as money very well spent.
Bottom line - traditional forms of advertisement are a thing of the past. Advertising is a vital part of the success of any business. The branding of any company must be current, trendy, and flashy in order to captivate its audience. Social networking sites are the in-thing right now...and plenty of businesses are paying big bucks to catch the attention of the people who have bought into this trend.
The objective is to get your attention...and in my opinion - mission accomplished.
I like how Twitter is now because it separates itself from the Myspace and Facebook of today. Also, it shows the people that have Twitter accounts that he or she is actually connecting to their favorite celebrity in a somewhat personal level...unlike Myspace and Facebook where you really can't tell who is controlling those accounts
ReplyDeletei dont have a twitter but i do have a facebook and i hate all of the ads. i get online to see whats going on in my friends and see how they're doing not how to get ripped with an mma workout. if i had a twitter i would not want all of the ads its easier that way.
ReplyDeleteAs Anthony said, I do not have a Twitter, however, I do have a Facebook and Myspace, and the advertisements are extremely annoying. And like CWalls7 said, Twitter not having advertisements is the very thing that separates itself from Facebook and Myspace. I personally hate when I log into Facebook and have 5 notifications from "living social" or telling me that I've been "poked" by someone.
ReplyDeleteEven though i understand that those advertisements are the very things paying for me to have an account, I think that it would be a mistake to put advertisements on Twitter.
I have a twitter. I rarely use it. Sooner or later the all mighty dollar causes sites like Myspace and facebook to cave in to advertising. otherwise, the creators pay for site space and lose money without really gaining any.
ReplyDeleteTwitter is making a mistake and investment at the same time. The internet is becoming more like television. The Only real way for a site to have absolutely no advertising is if it's members paid an annual or monthly fee and the site was in contract to not advertise. Of course, I'm not about to shell out 10 bucks a months just so I don't have to deal with being 'poked' or 'sorority life gifted'. I'll just filter through the excess on my own instead of paying someone else to just sit on their behinds.
Twitter seems to be the big "In" social networking site of the moment, but I can honestly says I can't stand it. I do not have an account and will not be getting one. However, my job has an account and we are required to post messages. It seems to me that the people who get so into the whole twitter thing are the people who are mainly concerned about celebrities. If you look at the ridiculous garbage they post I only find it a waste of time, unless you are really eager to find out where Paris Hilton has dinner or what she bought that day. Useless.
ReplyDeleteAt first glance, I would say absolutely they are making a mistake, but after reading more of the post and thinking more into it. I would have to say no they are not really making a mistake because as you said they have to make money, and 90 percent of internet companies makes profit off of advertisement. So to say its a mistake is a bit wrong because everyone has to make a living, and there's no telling how much money is put into twitter each month. I do however believe that they way they control and monitor the advertisement the put out there will somewhat determine the road they continue to travel down.
