School's out : Are students taking a pass on facebook??
In this article, studies show that about 900,000 high school students and 1.6 million college students have suddenly gone "missing" from the facebook website. The article continues on to state that, " It's unclear and doubtful even that the students actually stopped using Facebook. The network's own date and third-party ComScore date show users under 18 and 18-24 age groups continued to grow through the period. But facebook date for advertisers show the number identifying themselves as being in high school dropped 17 % and those identifying themselves as college enrollees plummeted 22%." Studies show that the reason for the drops in facebook users is mainly because of parents, grandparents, friends of family, and teachers researching and checking up on their facebook users. Apparently, we as teens and young adults do care what others think, or at least 900,000 and 1.6 million college students do. How do you feel, If family friends studied you on facebook, would you change anything? Would you have a facebook if no privacy setting existed? Would your pictures and personal information change?

I am on facebook but I have probably deleted it about six or more times. I'll get back on it keep in touch with my friends and family from out of town and see pictures. I've deleted it so many times because the "privacy" policy we've agreed to and all the information about ourselves we've posted on there seems sketchy. I think the people who run Facebook are people with ties to the CIA, the US Department of Defense and the Information Awareness Office who are can gain access to information of anybody on Facebook. I'm not worried about friends or family seeing things I have on mine, just more so about the government. If anybody has ever read the privacy policy on Facebook, it is pretty scary to me. It says "we may share information with third parties, including responsible companies with which we have a relationship..."We may be required to disclose customer information pursuant to lawful requests, such as subpoenas or court orders, or in compliance with applicable laws. Additionally, we may share account or other infomation when we believe it necessary to comply with law or to protect our interests or property. This may include sharing information with other companies, lawyers, agents or government agencies." That makes me highly uncomfortable.
ReplyDeleteI am on facebook and to be honest I live be the rule "Don't do or say anything that you wouldn't want your mother to hear." Because of my job I have to be very aware of my actions both in public and private. Therefore, you can check my facebook and won't find any pictures of me downing shots at the bar or anything of that nature. Facebook's privacy policy is pretty scary so I make sure I don't post anything I wouldn't care them "sharing".
ReplyDeleteIve had a facebook since i was a sophomore in high school, and not until about a year ago did this really start to be a problem. For a while i just watched what i said in my statuses and the pictures i put up, but once i was tired of doing that about 2 years later, i came to the conclusion that it was time to delete those people from my facebook that i knew the things i said would have an affect on. Maybe that was a little harsh, i dont know, but what i do know is that this is an "optional" social internet site. So if people want to make an uproar of the fact that i took them off of my facebook, then let it be. People need to realize that facebook is not the truth and most of those statuses that people may would not like, are also thoughts coming straight from someones mind without much thought or action..at all. Facebook is facebook, a place for me to keep in touch with my family and friends and it will stay that way for me. The fact that it is the topic of every other conversation these days is a little ridiculous, but i guess that the world we live in.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Katie...My mother always told me"Never write anything on paper you wouldn't want anyone to read" with that being said most people are not going to put up anything offensive or naughty. And if people are going to put up stuff of that nature and don't want certain people to see they can block them! and Facebook was created for COLLEGE kids...I think sometimes people forget that! When Myspace became so big I think Facebook thought that they should be big like them tooo and gave rights to everyone to have a account! Yes I think its very weird that my mom has a Facebook but its 2009! And Facebook has now shifted gears for a social network for everyone to keep up with everyone.
ReplyDeleteI think you shouldn't put anything on facebook that you don't want anybody else to see or pt what you are bout to do or go. Also i think you shouldn't out your location or anything for safety reasons.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Jeffrey, if you dont want people to know your information, you shouldnt broadcast it over the web where it is free to be seen by whomever decides to read about you. I also feel that facebook has changed for the better as well as the worse. I remember when facebook was primarily a college thing, now there are kids, parents, teachers and even grandparents who have facebook accounts. I understand parents want to keep and eye on what their kids are doing, but leave facebook to us college students. Everyone else can go back to myspace. I dont want anyones grandfather leaving me anymore comments on my wall.
