Fear does not equal persuasion

Imagine being hired to produce a video to incite fear in the viewers? In Wales, the police department wanted a video that would encourage drivers--especially young drivers--not to text while driving. But, a simple "don't do this" message wasn't thought to be enough. And the result? There's doubt that a gruesome video can do enough to change behavior. See for yourself and think of how you could produce a better--more persuasive--message.

  1. I would display the message with a more serious approach with the teenager going through a horrible situation; for example, being involved in an accident or possibly a fatal accident just to show the viewers at home how dangerous it could possibly be

  2. While that video is disturbing, it definitely gets the point across that texting while driving is a serious problem. I feel that it should at least be shown in drivers ed classes for high school students. I, myself have had to go to driving school for getting a speeding ticket and they show you films of people in car accidents and interviews with their families. I'm not going to say I have NEVER went over the speed limit since seeing those videos, however, it did have an effect on me. This is the age of text messaging and people are going to text while driving regardless. However, if videos could be shown to students while they are still impressionable, I think it would have an effect. Who cares if it's gory if it can save lives!

  3. I love the video. Well not love the video, but you know what I mean. I love the point that they are sending the viewers. Texting is one of the leading causes of accidents and it can and should be easily avoided, yet it's not. This video if anything might scare the you know what out of that one person who constantly texts while driving and it just might save their life or someone else's. So if this ad stops ONE person or scares ONE person which it will, then it has been successful.
